CAMBRIDGE, Idaho (AP) _ Farmers and ranchers in southwestern
Idaho are embracing new conservation measures designed to hlep the
sage grouse and avoid potential conflicts if the bird is declared
endangered.

Producers are working with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game
to enhance habitat protection across 500,000 acres near towns like
Weiser, Midvale and Cambridge.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to decide in
February whether to add the chicken-sized bird to the endangered
species list in Idaho and 10 other western states.

The agreement crafted by the state is intended to give farmers
and ranchers assurances a federal listing won't create new
regulations on private land that could threaten their livelihood.

The agreement is now subject to public comment.
