Blizzard Warning For Parts Of The Western Magic Valley

Tools

By Brian Neudorff

(KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV) Blizzard warnings are in effect for Jerome, Gooding and Twin Falls county until 5pm Friday evening. Winter Storm Warning is in effect for northern Blaine county until 5am and until 5pm Friday for southern Cassia county. Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Minidoka, Lincoln, northern Cassia county and southeastern Blaine county until 5pm Friday evening.

A blizzard warning is less about how much snow we are going to get but the conditions that come with falling and blowing snow, strong sustained winds of 35 mph or greater, and the low visibility that is created from the blowing snow. Visibility will drop down to one quarter of a mile or less and it has to be sustained for 3 hours. As the winds blow it can also drift large amounts of snow over roadways causing dangerous conditions and closing roadways as well.

Snow will begin to redevelop across the region towards the early morning of Friday and could come down at a fair clip during the morning. Winds are also expected to pick up as a storm system to the north drops south across the region. Snow amounts will vary from around 2 to 5 inches in the Snake River plain, including Twin Falls, Jerome, Gooding, and Burley with 4 to 8 inches possible in the South Hills towards Jackpot.

Main concern with this system is the slick roads and the dangerous conditions that will be produced thanks to the strong gust winds, causing blowing and drifting. White out conditions from low to near 0 visibility. If conditions get bad and you don't have to be out then don't venture out.
