New Tool For Weather Forecasters, Social Media
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Worldwide, over a billion people use social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and Google Plus. Here in the United States, nearly half of Americans have smart phones. More people are turning to social media to get news and weather information.
During the Moore, Oklahoma tornado, the National Weather Service used social media to send out life saving information out to the public.
“Minute by minute as those tornadoes were going through the weather service was posting information about exactly where those tornadoes were occurring…Twitter is important to the weather service for getting information but also giving information out,” said Dan Valle, Lead Forecaster from the National Weather Service in Pocatello, ID.
Meteorologists rely on social media, not only to report the weather, but to receive weather reports. These reports can give meteorologists a better picture of what the weather is doing, and help them make more accurate forecasts.
Unfortunately not all weather information you find on social media is accurate. Unless you’re following a reliable source like the national weather service, or the weather authority team, some of the information can be false.
Dan Valle, said “We will take the photo and put it into Google and see if it matches up, sometimes there’s a lot of copies and remakes out there.”
