Wildfire Burning In Salmon-Challis National Forest

By KMVT Newsroom

Meanwhile a wildfire burning through timber in rugged terrain in the Salmon–Challis National Forest in Central Idaho has more than doubled in size and forced officials to keep state Highway 21 closed on Sunday.

Officials said the banner fire northwest of Stanley near banner summit is up to 1.5 square miles after being fanned by high winds.

Kent Fuellenbach of the Salmon–Challis National Forest said some 400 firefighters are battling the blaze along with six helicopters and air tankers based in Boise.

He said it's unclear when the highway might reopen.
