Gooding, Idaho - JoAnn Hendersen Guthrie, an 84 year old Gooding resident, passed away Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at home with family at her side.
JoAnn was born August 13, 1927 in Missouri. She was adopted as an infant by Frank and Carrie Hendersen from an orphanage in Kansas City, Missouri. They lived on a farm in Phillipsburg, Kansas until JoAnn was 9 years old. Hardships of the dust bowl caused Frank to move his family west. They homesteaded in North Shoshone where JoAnn attended elementary school at the old Gomes School. She graduated from Shoshone High School in 1945.
On July 28, 1946, JoAnn married Elden “Red” Guthrie. They lived on the farm that Frank had homesteaded, and worked together for 44 years until 1988, when they retired to Gooding. They had four children. JoAnn was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile, The Wood River Center Grange, The Buttons and Bows Square Dance Club, and The Garden Club.
JoAnn is survived by her son Galen (Debbie) Guthrie, of Nampa, Idaho; daughters Glenda (Gary) Payne, of Republic Missouri, and Julie (Steve) Mulder, of Boise, Idaho; Eight grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren with one more on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband Red, her son Jerry and her parents.
Visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, August 13, 2012 at Demaray Funeral Service – Gooding Chapel. Burial will follow at the Shoshone Cemetery in Shoshone.
