Ernest Smythe Jones
Rupert, Idaho - Ernest Smythe Jones, a 92-year-old Rupert resident, passed away Nov. 17, 2012 at his home.
Ernest was born June 6, 1920 in Ontario, Calif., the son of Robert and Clarissa Jones. He graduated from high school in Chino, Calif. where he won first place for judging cattle in the state FFA convention. He was also a graduate of United States Merchant Marine Academy - Kings Point - in 1944 with a degree in Engineering. He married Betty Jean Keller on Sept. 4, 1948. He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Navy, serving as an Engineering Officer on big vessels for four years during World War II. On one occasion, he had the honor of bringing back P.O.W.’s. He was a carpenter, truck driver, farmer and rancher. Ernest is the last Homesteader on the Northside Project. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, American Hereford Association, Rupert Elks, and a member of the Homesteaders Association. He enjoyed following the Indy 500 races, cattle, draft horses, farming and ranching.
He is survived by his son John B (Coleen) Jones of Rupert; his grandchildren Jessica L. Jones and Amanda (Matt) Oglevie; his great grandchildren Carson and Juliana Oglevie, his brothers John A. Jones of Stockton, Calif. and Robert W. (Arlene) Jones of Twin Falls. He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jean, two daughters Janet Jones and Shellie Jones, his parents and one brother, Wesley Jones.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Nov. 21, at noon at the Rupert Cemetery with military graveside rites. Services are under the direction of SereniCare Funeral Directors, Joel Heward, Arvin and Larry Hansen. The family would like to thank Dr. Saunders, Minidoka Home Health and Hospice, and Ernest’s daughter-in-law, Coleen M. Jones for all their care.
