Twin Falls, Idaho - Douglas R. Nelson, 87, passed away at Rosetta Assisted Living Center in Twin Falls on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, following a long battle with dementia.
This coming January, Doug would have been 88 years old. He was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Kadoka, S.D., to Niel and Bernice Nelson. The family moved to Utah in 1942, where Doug attended school and eventually entered the United States Army, where he served as a mortar squad leader in France and Germany with the 70th Infantry Division until his separation on November 1945. He was awarded the bronze service star.
After returning from the Army, Doug attended the University of Utah, earning his bachelor’s degree in accounting. He married Audrey Burningham in 1948. To them were born four children, Robert, Kirk, Ann and John. They later divorced. Doug married DeOnne Smith in 1997. Throughout his employment years, Doug was employed by several companies; i.e., Morrison Knudson, Monsanto, Leonard Construction Company, to mention a few. He retired in 1987. Doug enjoyed golfing, hunting and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, DeOnne of Twin Falls, Idaho; and children, Robert (Suzie) Nelson of Soda Springs, Idaho, Ann Lawrence of Sandy, Utah, John Nelson of Draper, Utah, and Whitney Smith of Twin Falls, Idaho; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Casi, Ryan, Krystyl, Taylor, Zoey B. and Ryder; five great-grandchildren; his two sisters, Joan Smith of Bountiful, Utah, and Nancy Michelson of Cave Creek, Ariz.; sister-in-law, Ruth Nelson of Tracy, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gerald; and his son, Kirk.
Cremation will be handled by Parke’s Magic Valley Funeral Home. No service is planned with respect to his wishes.
