Catherine Agnes Hurst, the sixth of nine children born to William R. and Sigrid Hurst on August 31. 1913 in the Snake River Canyon near Filer, Idaho. She attended Filer schools until moving to Middleton, Idaho in the 11th grade, graduating from Middleton High School.
Returning to Twin Falls, she worked at Magic Valley Hospital until she married. Melvin R. Atkinson and Catherine were married on November 1, 1934 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were blessed with five children. She was a loving wife and mother. Together they farmed several farms in the Magic Valley, settling in Buhl in 1951. Catherine enjoyed her garden, cows and chickens.
Work outside the home included; diet kitchen in two hospitals, seasonal work at the cannery, some restaurant work, 12 years for the hot lunch program in Buhl and lots of popcorn balls for Christmas sacks at church.
Crossword puzzles and cooking were her passions. Anytime, day or night, when you came to visit, her first words were, “Have you eaten?” The joys and sorrows of family and friends were all shared around the kitchen table. She was loved by all who knew her because she loved everyone for themselves.
A strong Christian, she was an active member of the Church of the Nazarene. She received a Distinguished Service Award for her faithful service.
Preceding her in death are her parents, husband, siblings and a great grandson.
Surviving her are her children, Ray Atkinson, Roy (Carol) Atkinson, Doris (Gary) Barnes, Grant (Erma) Atkinson, and Gary Atkinson; nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and nineteen great great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews.
