Only a single game in Kimberly Wednesday to determine who would represent the district. The Bulldogs hosted SCIC rival Buhl and it was every bit the defensive showdown fans expected.
Nellie Makings and Leslie Hunter threw defensive shutouts through five innings of play. With their defenses playing every pitch like the state title depended on it, the two battled evenly, getting out of each inning in time, savoring the drama for the fans. But the Bulldogs would eventually get runners in position, playing small ball the way it was meant to be played. Kylee Butler led off the bottom of the sixth with a well-earned single. Makings followed her with a single of her own throught the six hole. A sacrifice moved the girls into scoring position, and Alex Pfefferle laid down a bunt, allowing Butler to sneak in under the home plate tag. Another fly out would set the plate for Whitney Carlton, who sent a shot at second base. The ball ricocheted loose from the fielder's glove, allowing both Makings and Pfefferle to plate, and earning Carlton 2 RBI and a double. The Bulldogs would fly out to end the inning, but they held the Indians scoreless in their seventh and earned the win, 3-0, and secured a chance to defend last season's state title.
