Boys Track Athlete Of The Season: Gage Silva
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) Gage Silva is one of those athletes who will compliment the team first before recognizing his own accolades. Yet, his accomplishments helped Lighthouse Christian reach a new milestone. That's why he's our Boys Track Athlete of the Season for Small Schools.
"I'm most proud of just lighthouse as a team getting more kids to come out this year, we had the biggest track team in lighthouse history and that's what made us winning conference and districts and state possible," explains the modest Silva.
This year Lighthouse Christian School earned its first ever 1A State Championship in track.
Athletic Director Darren Van Hofwegen says, "first time district champions so that was pretty exciting for everyone involved."
One of the reasons is this athlete: Gage Silva. A junior at Lighthouse, won the 110 and the 300 hurdles at state.
"State champion and both sweeping the hurdles has been a dream of mine. I almost did it last year, but fell short," adds Silva.
In 2013, Silva false started at districts in the 110 hurdles so he could only compete in the 300 hurdles at state.
Not only did he compete, but earned the first, of what would become back to back state championships. This year meant redemption in the 110.
"My times are just progressively getting faster and faster over the year. My 110 time I almost broke into the 14's and for my 300 time, I almost broke into the 39's and that's what O wanted to come close to this year," adds," adds Silva.
Looking ahead, Lighthouse of course would like to repeat, but student involvement is also very important.
Van Hofwegen says, "if we win, that's fantastic and we just want to get kids involved, but i think we're doing a good job of that."
As for Silva, he's using the hurdles as an opportunity to take him to the next level.
"I'm hoping to get a couple of scholarship offers from colleges around here. That's been my dream to take the next step and go to college."
Congratulations, Gage Silva, our Boys Track Athlete of the Season for Small Schools.
