Girls Track Athletes Of The Season: Kami Freestone & Marcie Williams
Malta, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) 70 miles to the east is the town of Malta and Raft River High School.
The track team features two high caliber athletes, making it difficult to pick just one for recognition.
Kami Freestone and Marcie Williams both won state championships this year. Meet our Small School Girls Track Athletes of the Season.
You can call them the one two punch.
Williams exclaims, "yeah it was me and Kami all year long, it was just like one would take first, another would take first, you never knew who was going to pull through at state."
Freestone won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.18, setting a new school record.
"Which is pretty impressive and a cool deal, since I took 6th last year," explains Freestone.
Williams took 4th, but Williams came back winning the 300 hurdles, setting a new school record time of 46.02. Freestone came in 3rd.
For Freestone, the 2014 state championship wrapped up her high school career, but her junior campaign was one to remember and gave her a reason to excel senior year.
Freestone adds, "at state I was running really fast, I was doing really good, I was going to pr by quite a bit in the 300's, but I think I hit the third to the last hurdle, I hit it wrong, and I fell down, and I got up, I took last place, it was the slowest time I've run all season and so I got up and I said you know what, I've got that hay fire, I'm going to come back and it's going to be ridiculous. So I came back my senior year, I worked really, really hard. And it paid off."
Freestone's leadership and experience provided Williams the skills she needed this year.
"It was a great experience because Kami made me a better runner, she helped me throughout practices, helped me with my form, she helped me push and was my drive to getting to state and winning state," explains Williams.
And that drive to succeed might take Williams to the top.
Williams says, "coming into junior year, I want to go back to back state, I want to beat the state record...because I came really close to the state record, I got a low 46 and the state record is a 45. 5."
School records aren't the only thing Freestone and Williams share. Both girls have sisters who also excelled in track at Raft River.
Congratulations Kami Freestone and Marcie Williams, our small school girls track athletes of the season.
