For the first time ever Soldier Mountain will host the 2008 Hartford U.S Disabled National Championships this week. Officials say the event will feature disabled skiers who lost a limb or are paralyzed but are physically sound. Ski School & Race Program Director Ken Corrock says, "We were approached last May by the coaches from the U.S. ski team and they were looking for a site for the U.S. championships. They knew about us because we've been able to host speed events, downhill super G, as well as shalom events." Skiers will start practicing on the slopes tomorrow. Corrock says that the biggest challenge is setting up for the event which requires great attention to detail. "We had a couple of obstacles that we wanted to come over, one was the lift system, we wanted to make sure we have fix grouped lifts which are old style lifts and they said no problem and the other thing that really enticed this whole thing was we could put on a quality downhill event here for them." If you never seen this type of racing event – Corrock encourages the public to attend. The championships feature the very best disabled racers in the country who know a thing or two about skiing. Corrock says "They're going to see some pretty amazing skiing. Some skiing that is comparable to some of the better skiing that we have in the U.S."
