The 2008 Hartford U.S. Disabled National Championships wrapped up today at soldier mountain with more than 40 athletes from across the country fighting for a spot in the Olympics.
John Davis isn't your typical skier.
Instead of standing on two legs he is strapped into a sled with one ski on the bottom because he has a disability.
But that doesn't stop him from hitting the slopes.
John Davis says, "Snow for me is just a good medium to get out of my wheelchair the slopes are just like your canvas and its like floating in the air it's a good feeling."
In fact Davis enjoys a challenge and puts forth his full effort even when skiing with those who aren't disabled.
Davis says, "These guys are inspiring to me because it's fun to watch them fall on their heads and spin around trying to keep up with me."
Davis says being able to laugh at others is what makes the sport even more enjoyable and those who ski with Davis say they look up to him as well.
Robert Queen says, "Watching these guys is absolutely amazing when you look at the capability they have the speed they generate its pretty aspiring and it's a reality check."
Ken Corrok says, "I think there is a risk any time you ski race and especially watching these guys go 60 to 65 miles an hour on these sleds down hill. i have to hand it to them it's quite an achievement."
And at the end of the day win or lose its all smiles for these athletes who put in their best effort no matter what.
Davis says, "A lot of smiles, a lot of fun and a lot of great competition."
