All across the region, various communities celebrated Arbor Day today with food, festivities and of course planting trees.
Arbor day events came to a close today as cities across Southern Idaho celebrated the event in different ways, but all chose to help benefit the community and the planet.
This morning in Filer, the community earned the tree city USA award for its dedication as well as the growth award.
Dave Kiesig says, "In Idaho we have 74 cities that have earned this award, 94% of Idaho’s urban population now lives in tree city USA."
Bob Templeman says, "It started about ten years ago and we received a grant in this park here and we provided some trees from the department of lands and every year it has taken off."
At the Radio Rondevoo many gathered to learn about the various plans of local organizations and sustainable ways to live and over at rock creek park, community forestry members, CSI students and various officials also planted trees.
Twin Falls was recognized as the second county in the state to receive the tree city USA award.
County Commissioner Tom Mikesell read the proclamation.
Gerry Bates says, "The city and the county recognize that they care for their public owned tree. They recognize that the trees are important to the city, make it more of a livable space."
