Another Windy Day Across Southern Idaho
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) Cold front working across southern Idaho Tuesday will bring more windy weather to the Magic Valley during the afternoon and evening. While this event will not be like the St. Patrick’s Day wind storm it will still be windy. Sustained winds will be westerly between 25 and 35 mph and gusting to 40 to 50 mph at times. The National Weather Service issued wind advisories for Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday evening.
So what makes it so windy? Two things are taking place with this wind event. As a cold front moves through we have a very sharp change in pressure. This is called a pressure gradient and the more the pressure changes over a short distance the stronger the winds are. We also have winds from the upper levels of the atmosphere working down to the surface providing more energy and also adding the strong gusty winds.
For those not a fan of the wind, they will die down Tuesday night. It will remain breezy going into Wednesday with wind speeds between 10 and 20 mph and gusting to near 30 mph. High pressure builds in on Thursday and winds will be lighter.
