What Is Monsoon Moisture?

By KMVT News

The dog days of summer are here and it feels like it!

By the way, the dog days of summer are the period between July 3 to August 11 which is twenty days before and twenty days after the conjunction of Sirius (the dog star) and the sun.

Ok now back to the heat. We expect highs to be in the upper 80s and 90s today and tomorrow will be even hotter. Take a look at what futurecaster is showing for highs on Wednesday.

Holy sweat Batman!

If you're sick and tired of the heat there is a little light at the end of the tunnel. A nice cool down is on the way for Thursday and monsoon moisture will push into our area.

When people hear the word monsoon they immediately think of the flodding that happens during monsoon season in India. Therefore, flooding is how most would define a monsoon. However, a monsoon is actually a shift in wind direction. Here in North America we have a high pressure system that generally sets up over the four corners region between June 15 and September 15. This causes a shift in the wind from the usualy dry west flow to a moist south and southeast flow from the Gulf of Mexico and/or Mexico.

As this happens showers and storms travel around the clockwise flow of the high pressure.

Having said that, we will see this monsoon moisture surge our way Thursday and Friday. At this point chances for storms are better on Thursday than Friday but we expect to see activity both days. The good news is that temperatures will be cooler. Highs will be in the 80s Thursday through Saturday which is where highs normally are this time of the year.

The normal temperatures will be short lived as highs will be back in the 90s Sunday and Monday. My advice on how to beat the heat during the dog days.. get in front of a fan!
