JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — A field in Jerome located on South Tiger Drive is going to be home to Jerome School District’s newest elementary school. Along with it will come some changes.

“In our neighborhood school model that we are moving towards, our families will be able to build relationships in that school and be able to stay in that school for a long time, so they’ll really get to know the staff and the teachers,” said Wendy Ohlensehlen, the curriculum director.

With the addition of the new school, it will make it so all of the elementary schools are a K-6 model, while the middle school will just be grades 7 and 8. The change aims to help make more room in each school.

“We really needed to ease up on the population that we have in all of our other schools including the middle school,” said Ohlensehlen. “We have a lot of students in the middle school, and we’ll be bringing the 6th grade down which will help both the elementary schools and the middle school.”

Another impact will be on the transportation both to and from the school. Currently, some kids aren’t getting home until very late.

“The bussing and having all of the families going to all of the different schools at all of the different levels has caused a big traffic issue in the schools, and we are really hoping to alleviate some of these issues by having neighborhood buses that go to one zone and then go into the schools,” said Ohlensehlen.

The school will not be ready until the Fall of 2023, but Barbara Brown has been selected to be the principal of the new school, an opportunity she says she is looking forward to.

“We all know that if you give a kid a good education and that you provide everything they need, you can change the trajectory of their life. That’s what we are hoping for,” Brown said.
