(KMVT/KSVT) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is asking the public to consider other options if you're choosing to drink raw milk.
The CDC reports, raw, unpasteurized milk can have harmful bacteria, viruses or parasites. The CDC says drinking raw milk can possibly expose you to E. coli, listeria or salmonella. Public health experts with South Central Public Health District say symptoms can include diarrhea and vomiting.
"We all have a presence as far as what products we want to consume., but essentially what pasteurization it heats up the milk to a specific temperature for a set period of time and it kills the harmful that can be in the milk. It essentially makes the milk safer to consume."
In Idaho, there's a raw milk program through the State Department of Agriculture and producers have to meet special requirements if they want to produce raw milk.
