Collapsed mine shaft closed in southwestern Idaho

BOISE, Idaho (AP)- Federal officials say they've closed a mine shaft that recently collapsed in the historic mining town of Silver City in southwestern Idaho and will check it again this spring to make sure it's stable.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management in a news release Friday says the sinkhole that was first noticed by a town resident in late November was about 15 feet (4.5 meters) wide and about 25 feet (7.6 meters) deep.

Workers filled it in early in December due to safety concerns as it was near a community park.

The area was heavily mined in previous decades and the exact locations of tunnels and shafts aren't certain.
