UPDATED: One dies, one injured in I-84 head-on collision, east of Hazelton

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — UPDATE (6/11, 11:38 P.M.): A 38-year-old Rupert man is dead after a head-on collision with a semi-truck on Interstate 84 Tuesday afternoon.

Idaho State Police issued a news release saying Marty Lowder was traveling westbound in a Crown Victoria when he left the roadway, crossed the median and collided with an eastbound semi-truck hauling two trailers of potatoes. The vehicles caught fire.

Lowder died of his injuries at the scene, near mile marker 195, east of Hazelton. The driver of the semi-truck Rosalio Llamas, 38, of Burien, Washington, was taken by ground ambulance to St. Luke's Magic Valley Medical Center in Twin Falls.

The eastbound lanes were blocked for approximately 5 hours.

On Tuesday, June 11, 2019, around 3:22 p.m., the Idaho State Police investigated a two-vehicle fatality crash eastbound on Interstate 84 at milepost 195, east of Hazelton, in Jerome County. Marty Lowder, 38, of Rupert, was traveling westbound in a 2003 Ford Crown Vic when he left the road, crossed the median and went into the eastbound lanes. Rosalio Llamas, 38, of Burien, Washington, was traveling eastbound in a 2007 Kenworth semi hauling two trailers loaded with potatoes when his vehicle struck Lowder's vehicle head on. The vehicles came to rest in the left lane where they caught fire.

Lowder succumbed to his injuries on scene. Llamas was transported by air ambulance to St Lukes Magic Valley in Twin Falls. It is unknown if seatbelts were worn by either driver. Next of kin have been notified. The eastbound lanes were blocked for approximately 5 hours.

The Idaho State Police was assisted by Jerome County Sheriff's Office, the Idaho Transportation Department, Fish and Game, Magic Valley Paramedics, Air St Lukes, Rock Creek QRU, First Segregation EMS, and West End Fire Department. This crash is under investigation by the Idaho State Police.

ORIGINAL: Emergency crews responded to two-vehicle collision on Interstate 84, about 5 miles east of Hazelton, near mile post 195.

The eastbound lanes are blocked at this time. Idaho State Police advise motorists to use an alternate route.

A KMVT reporter on-scene said firefighters were using a spray foam on the smoldering cab of a semi-truck. It appears as semi-truck pulling two trailers and another vehicle collided. Traffic is flowing in the westbound lanes of the interstate and eastbound traffic was being diverted along Frontage Road.

KMVT’s Ricardo Coronado could see Idaho State Police, First Segregation Fire District, Magic Valley Paramedics and county sheriff’s office vehicles at the crash site.

A medical helicopter had been called out.

KMVT will update this story as more information becomes available.

An initial news release said the westbound lanes were blocked.
