Firefighters spent over two hours trying to control a house fire in Rupert on Wednesday night.

The fire started just before 6 p.m. at 314 First Street.

Susan Fowler lives a few houses down from the fire, and she said she heard a big boom before noticing billowing black smoke coming from the house.

When she went outside to check it out, police told her to go back inside. After a couple minutes, they evacuated the neighborhood.

Fowler said she could hear ammunition going off as the blaze continued.

By 8 p.m., firefighters had not deemed the structure sound enough for detectives to go inside and figure out what caused the fire.

They say the house belongs to Dale Mounce, who is wanted on failing to appear on three counts of felony aggravated battery with a .9 mm pistol.

Police have not been able to contact Mounce, and ask anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to contact them at 208-434-2330.

They say there shouldn’t be any danger to the public.

We will update this story as more information becomes available.
