Grow Southern Idaho; Rainbow Trout
Since the water temperatures here are nearly perfect year round, Idaho is the number one producer of rainbow trout in the United States.
An estimated 95 percent of all trout consumed in the U.S is farm raised.
Idaho accounts for nearly 75 percent of all domestic trout production in the nation.
“We’re fortunate here in southern Idaho to be blessed with spring resources that are just ideal for rainbow trout,” said Gary Fornshell, University of Idaho aquaculture specialist. “Water temperature is approximately 58–59 degrees Fahrenheit. The ideal temperature for growing rainbow trout, temperature is constant throughout the year so fish grow.”
Nearly 41 million pounds of Idaho trout is produced annually thanks to the ideal water temperatures.
Approximately 115 permitted aquaculture facilities exist in Idaho, nearly seventy percent of which operate in the magic valley, discharging to the Snake River or its tributaries.
