UPDATE: One dies in US 93 crash near Jerome

JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - UPDATE (12/20):

A Hazelton man died following a crash Wednesday evening near Jerome.

Idaho State Police said at about 5:47 p.m. Ramiro Gonzalez Gutierrez, 69, of Hazleton, drove a Chevrolet pickup east on State Highway 25 at the intersection with U.S. Highway 93. Michael Burton, 40, of Dietrich, was driving Honda Pilot south on U.S. 93. Gonzalez Gutierrez stopped at the stop sign, but then failed to yield and collided with Burton's vehicle.

Gonzalez Gutierrez and his passenger Adela Lemus, 67, of Hazelton, were transported to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Medical Center and later taken to Saint Alphonsus in Boise. Thursday afternoon ISP issued an updated news release saying Gonzalez Gutierrez later died of his injuries.

Investigators do not believe Gonzalez Gutierrez and his passenger were wearing seat belts. Michael Burton and his passenger, Robin Burton, 37, of Dietrich, were wearing seat belts and neither were transported for treatment.

According to an ISP news release, during the collision a tire came from one of the vehicles and struck a nearby Volkswagen Jetta. It did not injure either of the occupants.
The southbound lanes of U.S. 93 were blocked for about two hours while crews worked to clear the scene. Idaho State Police was assisted by Jerome County Sheriff's Office, ITD, Magic Valley Paramedics, and Jerome Rural Fire Department.

UPDATE 11 p.m. :

On Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at 5:47 p.m., Idaho State Police investigated an injury crash on U.S. Highway 93 at the junction of State Highway 25, east of Jerome.

Ramiro Gonzalez Gutierrez, 69, of Hazleton, was driving a 1993 Chevrolet S10 pickup east on State Highway 25 at the intersection with U.S. Highway 93. Michael Burton, 40, of Dietrich, was driving 2007 Honda Pilot south on U.S. 93. Gonzalez Gutierrez stopped at the stop sign, but then failed to yield and collided with Burton's vehicle.

Gonzalez Gutierrez and his passenger, Adela Lemus, 67, of Hazelton, were transported to St. Luke's Magic Valley and later to St. Alphonsus in Boise. Investigators do not believe they were wearing seat belts. Michael Burton and his passenger, Robin Burton, 37, of Dietrich were wearing seat belts and neither were transported.

UPDATE 8 p.m.: All lanes of travel are now open.

ORIGINAL 7 p.m.: Idaho State Police said they are investigating an injury crash on US Highway 93 at the junction of State Highway 25, east of Jerome.

The southbound lanes of travel are currently blocked.
