An Idaho inmate who was helping battle a California wildfire is back in custody after walking away from his inmate fire crew near the town of Sonoma.
Angelo Manuel Diaz, 37, was reported missing at about 11:30 MDT Friday. A Napa County Sheriff’s deputy found Diaz about three hours later. Diaz reportedly claims he got lost while going to a restroom.
Diaz’ 19-member crew and two correctional officers left the South Idaho Correctional Institution on Oct. 14. They have been based at a fire camp in Santa Rosa, California.
On Jan. 30, in Bannock County, Diaz was sentenced to 3 years to 7 years for possession of a controlled substance.
