Jerome rest area to permanently close

JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) The Jerome rest area off eastbound Interstate 84 will permanently close on Wednesday, Nov. 14.

Idaho Transportation Department announced the closure on Thursday.

To compensate travelers who would stop at the rest area, ITD entered into an Interstate Oasis agreement with businesses at exits 165, 173 and 182.

In this agreement the businesses will offer travelers the same amenities of ample parking and restrooms free of charge.

ITD's agreement includes putting up signs along the highway, signaling where motorists can go.

Jessica Williams. ITD spokeswoman acknowledged the rest area is busy but the closure is necessary.

"Because of its age, that actual facility would need to undergo pretty substantial repairs in order to bring it up to current standards,” Williams said. “Fiscally we just felt it was more responsible to enter into Interstate Oasis agreement with nearby businesses."

The Jerome rest area was built in the 1970's and will be demolished within the coming months.
