Jerome woman warns of IRS scam phone calls

JEROME, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - A Jerome woman said she's been getting scam calls for years and she urges people to watch out for scammers and to be smart.

"They say they're the IRS," said Judy Richards, who received recent scam calls.

Richards said scammers called her twice in the past two days. The first call she received while watching television.

"They said they're the IRS and they're waiting for my phone call, and then this morning I got another one with a different phone number," she explained.

Richards said she doesn't answer phone calls from numbers she doesn't know.

"The number is off the wall. It's out there, and I don't know of any area codes that match this area code," she continued. "If it's important they can talk to the voicemail, and they did, and it's a scam."

The two area codes that called were from a 502 number and a 469 number, and Richards said they both left the same message.

"It says I need to call them back immediately, as soon as possible, that they are the IRS and that they have a representative waiting to talk to me," she said.

She wants to warn people again that these calls can happen.

"I don't want anybody to get scammed and this is a scam," she said.

Although she didn't report it to the police, she said she doesn't feel like there's not much we can do about them.

"I wish there was something that could be done, but there isn't, and we know that. You just have to stay on top of it and let other people know and don't let them get you," she urged.

Richards said she's received other scam calls before, especially as they tailor them to her and her life.

"Even one called me a couple months ago... because I'm a diabetic, saying that they can get me my diabetic testing supplies free, and all I had to give was my Medicare card, and that's my social security number. Hello? I told them where they could get off at too," Richards explained.

Richards said she doesn't like people taking advantage of the senior citizens. She said after getting these types of calls, she warns her friends, so they don't fall for it either.
