"Most people do not carry appropriate things": What to include in winter car kits

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - Tow truck companies are often called when a driver is in a predicament, like running off the road with ice or snow on the streets. So, what can you do to be prepared?

President and owner Charles Legg, of A1 Towing, said when a tow truck pulls up to a call, they normally see the driver sitting in their car trying to stay warm.

"Most people do not carry the appropriate things that you need when you’re going some place in the elements," Legg said.

So, preparing with a winter safety kit and having it in the car can go a long way.

"You need to have gloves, and a blanket maybe and a hat and things like that. A flashlight, safety kit, jumper cables," Legg listed.

He said having flares could be useful as well.

"Something to mark where you're at, depending on where you're going and stuff," he continued. "Sand, if you get stuck maybe you can shovel yourself out, put some sand under your tires to get you going if nobody can get to you."

Legg said it's always best to have a back up plan every time before hitting the road. Know who to call in case you get stuck, whether it'd be a family member or a tow truck.
