Report: Salt Lake City firefighter's demotion was improper

A Salt Lake City commission found that none of the allegations used by fire department leaders to demote the city's first female battalion chief were credible.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports the findings by the city's Public Service Commission were issued last week in a report examining the seven allegations that Assistant Fire Chief Robert McMicken leveled as the basis for Martha Ellis's 2016 demotion.

The commission has ordered for Ellis' rank and pay to be restored.

Salt Lake City officials say they're reviewing the report and exploring options as they move forward.

Ellis says she's thankful for the vindication that shows the discipline was targeted and not reflective of her performance.

Ellis filed a lawsuit in federal court earlier this year, claiming discrimination, harassment and retaliation by the department.
