Scam call uses your phone number to get an answer

TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Most people have received a scam call before, but the new scam going around Idaho is getting people's attention.

Residents are picking up their phone and seeing a call from their own number, but instead of the 208 area code, it has the new Idaho area code 986.

This leads some people to be curious and answer the call but according to the Federal Trade Commission that isn't a good idea.

In a press release the commission said scammers hope seeing your own number will make you curious enough to answer and give them the information they want.

Stephanie Rose said she and her husband both got the call, but luckily she had been warned not to answer.

"I've heard that they'll be saying that they're AT&T or Verizon and they're going to tell you that something's wrong with your account and a lot of people can fall for it," she said, "especially, if they don't know what's going on."

Rose said her policy is to just not answer any phone calls from numbers she doesn't know.

She says if it's important the person will leave a voicemail and she can call them back.
