Sen. Crapo to present military medals on Aug. 23 in Burley

BOISE, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) -- This week Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo will present his Spirit of Freedom Award to Idaho's first female graduate of military tank training, and medals of honor to a Burley World War II veteran.

Sen. Crapo will present military medals of honor, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, earned by WW II veteran Walter “Elmo” Holbrook to Holbrook’s family Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Cassia County Veteran Memorial, 1401 Overland Avenue, in Burley.

On Thursday, Sen. Crapo will be presenting his Spirit of Freedom Award to Sgt. First Class Erin Smith of the Idaho National Guard at 3 p.m. at Gowen Field in Boise.

Smith is Idaho’s first female graduate of military tank training through the U.S. Army’s M1 tank training program. She is the first female armor enlisted soldier in the nation to complete the training in Boise.
