Underground issue knocks out power at Magic Valley Mall
UPDATE: Crews are "backfeeding" power while they work on the issue so power could on and off in locations until the issue is completely resolved.
The Magic Valley Mall was without power Friday afternoon due to an underground power issue. At about 5 p.m., power was backfed and restored temporarily through part of the mall while power crews continued to resolve the issue.
The outage occurred at about 3:15 p.m. because of an underground 'fault,' or equipment issue, according to an Idaho Power corporate communications spokeswoman Krista West. She said crews will have to dig down to find and resolve the issue. As of about 6 p.m., Idaho Power had an estimated restoration time of about 8 p.m.
“What happens when you backfeed it doesn’t always hold,” West said. “We also can’t really tell, when they were backfeeding, some of the mall was back up. They’ll continue to try to backfeed to the get the mall up and running, and there is not estimated time of when that work will be compete. It may pop back up and out."
According to the Idaho Power Outage Line, the company received reports of some flashing and smoking in areas. The outage affected 93 customers in the area of Pole Line Road and Blue Lakes Blvd. North.
A KMVT reporter on scene, said police and fire crews were on scene assessing the situation, businesses surrounding the mall including Five Guys, Barns & Nobel, a Verizon store, America’s Best and others were either closed or people were leaving as of 4:30 p.m.
KMVT will have more information when it becomes available.
Idaho Power said it will list an estimated restoration time on its outage map when one becomes available. See a link for the outage map in the right-hand column.
