NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (Associated Press/WKYT) Burley native Troy Merritt shot a 5–under 67 on Monday to win the rain–delayed Barbasol Championship by one stroke.
This marks his second career PGA Tour victory and earned him a spot in next month's PGA Championship. Merritt led or shared the lead after each round.
He was one of four players tied for the lead at 18 under when the round began. He made five birdies, including an eagle–2 on the par–4 eighth hole, to stay in contention.
Our sister station WKYT spoke with Troy about how a win like this helps ease his mind headed into the future.
"You know for a guy that has struggled to maintain a job for each year I've been out here with the exception of the year after I won Quicken because I had the two-year exemption. Just knowing that I can play these last few weeks of the season not stressed out and if I'm gonna have full status next year that's key. My wife loves it. My wife loves I'm gonna have a job for the next two years but just knowing you've got that security for a couple years is awesome."
Merritt now leaves for the RBC Canadian Open in Ontario.
