Carey advances to state championship

NAMPA, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) Carey got off to a quick start and led for most of the game, en route to the 40-35 win.

Athana Versis led the Panthers with 11 points, while Hannah Stapleton produced a game-high 17 points for Nezperce.

Carey had a 20-16 lead at the half and used a 15 point third quarter to create some distance.

"This year we had three goals, win all of our home games, be district champs and we did that. Then coming into state championship is winning it, that's something we wanted to do from the start. That's the three goals we set," Athana Versis said.

Head coach Merrilee Sears explained why her Panthers got off to a quick start, "I knew they would come out of a zone and once we shoot out of it, then would go man." "We played our man offense really well...they're very resilient, they won't back down."

Carey plays Salmon River for the 1A DII state title on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Ford Idaho Center in Nampa.
