WENDELL, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) Wendell Football feels its coaching staff is stacked, bringing in talent that have proven winning legacies. Plus, with key returners, the Trojans look for consistency this fall, as well as a few victories along the way.
The hype surrounding Wendell starts with the leadership.
"Our coaching staff is unbelievable. They have great winning legacies wherever they've been. And we just couldn't be more excited to have them," explained head coach Cody Howerton.
The Trojans feature five new assistants on the staff this fall, many of them are familiar faces in southern Idaho.
Howerton said, "Mike Green out of Highland is our new AD, offensive coordinator. We have Jerry Diehl coming back, used to be a head coach here, Lonnie Funkhouser has been a head coach down in Hagerman, both those guys were at Gooding, they're here now. Then we got two new young guys, Mike Conrad coming out of Minico's system, he's been down in Las Vegas a couple of years and then Zach Clough who's been in Arizona."
And for returners like center Donald Bunn and quarterback Tristan Wert, there's a different vibe this summer.
Wert exclaimed, "there was a lot of excitement when Coach Howerton was telling us about the new coaches, everyone was getting together and it was exciting."
Bunn said, "with all our the coaches here, our new AD from Highland believes in us as well, he also told us that some of us could play over at Highland."
This marks Howerton's second year at the helm and he's already noticing vast improvements where they were one year ago.
"Our quarterback is going to be a year older, second year taking snaps. Our line is going to be really good this year," Howerton added. "Our kids have grown exponentially every day in practice and it's really exciting to see."
Motivation surrounds the team.
Wert expalined, "a lot of team is returning, we had to recruit some new players this year." "They'll be a big help, so that will be nice, something to look forward to."
As they prepare for their first opponent.
"I'm very excited for the season and ready for Marsing," Bunn added.
Wendell hosts Marsing on Friday, August 24.
