MOSCOW, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) The University of Idaho kicked off fall camp this weekend, as the Vandals prepare for their first season in the Big Sky Conference since 1995.
Idaho is coming off a 4-8 campaign in 2017 in its last year in the Sun Belt. The Vandals lost five of those games by a touchdown or less. Those close defeats are a big emphasis in the offseason and it comes down to ball security. Another key focus for them, special teams and improving the return game.
With the quarterback race, as of now, Coach Paul Petrino says both Colton Richardson and Mason Petrino could see snaps early in the season, but things could change in fall camp.
Here's Petrino now on differences between the Sun Belt and Big Sky.
"Most teams in the Big Sky try and win with offense and I think most of the teams the Sun Belt started out trying to win with defense. Most of the strengths of the Sun Belt teams were going to win with their defense first. They were really going to try and run the ball. I think with the Big Sky there's a lot of good quarterbacks will try to outscore you," Petrino said. "It's a little different brand of football and sometimes it's nice going to a new league."
Idaho begins and ends the regular season with tough non-conference foes. Try an away game at Fresno State on September 1 and ending with a trip to Gainesville to try and wrangle the Gators of Florida on November 17.
