Vander Esch on state basketball and loyalty to Salmon River

CALDWELL, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) It's not often you see an NFL star attend as many high school events as Leighton Vander Esch does.

He's been spotted at state volleyball, girls basketball and now boys basketball.

The Dallas Cowboys rookie loves hoops and his Alma mater, Salmon River High School. The Savages made the state tournament for the first time in years and Vander Esch wants to see it for himself.

He also holds five state records, but those may soon be broken.

"I'm sure that kid from Garden Valley, Covy (Kelly) will get a few of them, he almost got one of them today," Vander Esch said. "He's a heck of a ballplayer, fun to watch. He plays in the Long Pin League, so you got to support him."

Kelly had 34 points in the 60-54 win over Carey. Vander Esch's state record of 37 stands from 2014.

The Pro Bowler made national headlines this week, when he financially support a weight room at Salmon River.

Vander Esch added, "they always needed a weight room and when I come back home, I need a place to work out. It was a big part of that, giving back to those kids, they have no excuses now to get it done."
