HONOLULU (KHNL/Gray News) - Authorities are investigating a fatal crash that killed a teenager in Hawaii Thursday morning.

According to the Honolulu Fire Department, the crash happened during the early morning hours on Pali Highway when a car went over a cliff and caught fire.

Firefighters said they didn’t find any occupants in the vehicle when they were extinguishing the fire, but while searching the surrounding area, they discovered a girl.

First responders said the 16-year-old was found unresponsive in brush just below an embankment. She was pronounced dead at the scene following a medical assessment.

A portion of Pali Highway was shut down near the Kailua-bound tunnels for the on-scene crash investigation.

Honolulu police said investigators are still checking on what may have caused the collision.

The teen was not immediately identified by authorities.
