A young boy and two women trying to help were all caught in the strong currents. None of them could swim, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries wrote on social media.

When Matthew arrived and learned what had happened, he went into the water. He brought the young boy to safety first before guiding the first woman back and returning for the second. Officials said he had to pull the second woman to shore.

Matthew and the three individuals made it out of the water safely.

Officials said the waters near Caminada Pass may often appear calm, but can have strong tidal currents.
